"As a young man in New Zealand, I believe there is an unspoken mold to fit into: a mold of rugby, Swanndris, binge drinking, and “being a man”. I saw a gap in messaging targeting maturing guys that you don’t have to hide and fit into this mold if that's not you. All your interests, activities, and passions are something to be proud of. Teach guys from a young age to let these parts of themselves shine and watch what happens to their confidence and sense of self. The composition of my art is an homage to unlocking this superpower: the power of simply being yourself. I am grateful to have male figures in my life that allow me the freedom to explore my interests without feelings of fear or inadequacy. I have played many sports, tried some questionable clothes, and performed on stage. All of this helped me find the things I do and don’t like, and I leave high school with more confidence in who I am. I hope my art can be a reminder that, in a country of 5 million, everyone deserves to act and feel like themselves, everyday."
