"These photographs capture woodsheds up the Waitotara Valley in Ngamatapouri, where my family has lived and worked for generations. My great-grandfather, grandfather, dad and I all grew up out there and these buildings are part of that history. The sheds, weathered by time and the elements, are physical reminders of a past that shaped who we are today. They hold traces of those who built them, worked in them, and passed them down. I was inspired by Aaron Siskind’s style, how he focused on textures and small details to tell a bigger story. That’s what I’ve tried to do here. These sheds might seem simple, but to me, they represent connection, memory and the kind of heritage that often gets overlooked. In a time when many rural structures are being lost, overlooked or rebuilt, I aim to preserve their presence through photography, documenting before they disappear. It’s my way of holding onto the past and sharing it with others, especially those who come in the generation’s after."
