    Sarai Muir

"This piece ‘Apathy’, was a part of my Year 13 printmaking portfolio which focused on exploring themes of social isolation. In this work, I wanted to create a visual image that invites the viewer into the world of a young person. My hope is that it helps convey an understanding of their experience in a way that words can’t.

This piece in particular shows a figure slumped in a chair surrounded by an empty space devoid of any other presence. My goal was to recreate an atmosphere of resignation and listlessness.

In particular, during the pandemic, social isolation was something everyone had to learn to accept as time went on. It was hard to imagine a time that things would get better and there was no choice but to settle into a monotonous routine.

I really wanted to show how expressive the human body can be through pose and body language alone. You don’t even need to see their face to understand the emotion they’re feeling."
