Dead fish still lifes are among my favourite subjects to paint. Their lifeless state allows them to be immortalised in a single moment, inviting us to appreciate their complexities and details without the need for photographs. Even as the fish gradually lose colour and decompose, it is fascinating to observe how, even in death, their unique features remain recognisable. For example, the peculiar shape of a fin along its back or the stunning array of patterns created by its scales scattered along its tail. This communicates the idea that, if we look closely and observe, what we consider ordinary or inadequate can contain immense beauty.
