Hazel White's 2018 work draws inspiration from how we perceive the environment, showing not only the beauty of it, but also expressing our reaction and the emotion we feel as a result. This is conveyed through the use of painting techniques such as exaggerated colours and graffiti–like layering. She has focused on the idea that if we look at the world from different eyes or a different perspective, we can change how we perceive it – for the better or worse.
“My 2019 art explores the impact of nature. Growing up I have always loved nature and the outdoors. Especially through hobbies such as running and tramping I have found a connection with landscapes and an appreciation of the natural colours and tones in them, which can be reflected in my work. But even more than that I wanted to capture the simplicity of mind we receive in the biological complexity of nature which I’ve shown through the blocky yet detailed forms in my work.”
