Through my painting I want to convey and explore the many facets of the animal kingdom, and never-ending cycle of life, conflict, and death. In addition to showing the conventionally admired sides of nature, I also wanted to portray sides that are more negatively viewed especially in western culture, such as death, which is generally viewed as distasteful and insignificant, especially when compared to the death of a human. Instead of this perspective, I have tried to present the death of animals in my work as something beautiful, natural, and necessary, highlighting the importance of death in the circle of life and showing how, much like a phoenix from the ashes, life can emerge from loss. This outlook was further inspired by the beliefs held by many indigenous communities, encapsulating a common respect, spirituality, and sustainability that the general population is losing touch with due to the rise of macro-farming and the modern capitalistic landscape. Living on a farm has exposed me to the life and death of many animals, pets and otherwise. From losing sheep and lambs I had raised, hunting possums, and watching my dog devour too many dead animals to count, the concept of death and loss is prevalent. Due to this prevalence, I developed this more positive outlook, maybe as a way to cope with the grief of losing pets, or perhaps just as a way to deal with death in general.
